Social Action Committee

The Social Action committee coordinates opportunities for Temple Israel members to join in activities that will assist in Tikkun Olam, taking steps to repair our world. We often increase our community impact by joining with other congregations and social justice organizations.
Our recent social action activities have included:
Support for at-risk children through the weekly Club Compass after school program. We volunteer at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church to work with children from our neighborhood public elementary school. Some of our current volunteers have participated for the entire eight years of the program’s existence.
Reducing food insufficiency by funding and volunteering for the Jewish community’s Healthy Mobile Food Pantry.. We also join with Temple B’rith Sholom and First Congregational Church in creating Thanksgiving Baskets for 250+ families, which include two large cartons of food for each family.
Encouraging voter engagement through activities such as becoming voter registrars, canvassing the Temple Israel neighborhood with members of Douglas Avenue Methodist Church to increase voter registration, seeking to be a 100% voting congregation, and writing postcards to increase voting in low voting precincts.
